Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) Review- Updated Information

In 2024, gamers have become more curious about the look of their gaming laptop rather than focusing on how it performs. No doubt many manufacturers now prioritize the aesthetics of their gaming laptops rather than their performance.

That’s what Asus did with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. No fancy RGB keyboard and no LED stripes on the body. You might as well call it a MacBook with an RTX 4070.

Somehow, it didn’t bother me how Asus downgraded from this laptop’s previous model which contained an RTX 4090 to this version which has an RTX 4070. That’s because it does not make a lot of difference to general users. But does this laptop perform as well as it looks? We’ll find it out in today’s review blog.

Here, I’m going to deliver my experience with this latest laptop and help you decide whether it is a good machine for you or not. Let’s start.

Before I start to break down the different factors of this laptop, let’s take a look at its general specifications. I’ve discussed them in the table below:

CPUAMD Ryzen 9 8945HS
Storage Capacity1TB
Display details14-inch screen with resolution of 2880 x 1800 (Dolby Vision HDR)
Graphics detailsNvidia GeForce RTX 4070 (8GB GDDR6)
Camera 1080p
Battery 73 WHrs
Weight3.31 pounds or 1.5kg

I’ll be covering these specifications in detail as we continue the review of this laptop.

So, let’s review what I notice about a laptop first – the design.

Not that I’m against the bulky traditional bodies of gaming laptops, but seeing one with a sleek design caught my eye. It’s not hidden to anyone that the design of this laptop has been a controversial point of debate. Not to mention the expert’s views about how the performance was compromised to keep the laptop thin and lightweight.

But let’s just look at the bright side for a while. You get a laptop that can handle most of your games very well and is extremely portable. It only weighs one and a half kg and has a MacBook-like design.

The lid of this laptop has a black slash on it (and it’s not RGB, sorry.) Although it can be customized to some extent the only color you’re going to get is white. I know many of you are not a big fan of the traditional Asus logo on the back, but it made me a little sad seeing it shrink down to the corner of the lid.

The keyboard and touchpad are also professional-looking. The keyboard is single-zone RGB. The touchpad is very roomy, however. I prefer using a mouse with my laptop, but with its big touchpad, I really didn’t feel the need for it.

The ports you get on this laptop are:

  • HDMI
  • USB  4 Type-C
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
  • 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • MicroSD card reader

Overall, the design of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is sleek and professional rather than bulky and heavy like other gaming laptops.

Well, why do you buy a gaming laptop? For gaming, obviously. Let’s discuss how well you can do it on Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 comes with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU.

Zephyrus runs RTX 4070 along with the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS. The relationship between these components matters when it comes to testing the gaming.

So, let’s just keep the specification aside for a while and talk about gaming in a way that a general gamer understands. That is discussing the Frames Per Second (FPS).

I ran some of the popular games on this laptop. The fps I received are discussed in the table below.

GameResolutionFrames Per Second (FPS)
Shadow of Tomb Riader1080p100
Cyberpunk 20771080p39
Red Dead Redemption II1080p66
Far Cry 61080p77

So, you can say that the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is a decent choice for gaming. However, some heavy games may not give high fps.

Since the design of this laptop is very professional, I tested it from the perspective of an office user. Let’s discuss what I observed.

The general specifications of Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 are more than enough for running productivity tasks. That’s precisely what I observed during the testing.

Here’s the summary of the testing:

  • Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gained a single-core score of 1,890 on the GeekBench 5.5. The multi-core score it gained was around 11,754.
  • I tried copying a large amount of data on this laptop. It copied over 25GB of data at 1,334 MBps.
  • Zephyrus G14 was able to transcode a 4K video to 1080p in under 5 minutes.

These tests speak for the high productivity performance of this laptop. So, yes; you can use it both for gaming and professional uses.

Now, let’s review the display of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. It comes with a 14-inch screen. It has a resolution of  2880 X 1800. The screen is OLED and runs at 120Hz.

I watched several movies and YouTube videos on this laptop and the multimedia I got was exceptional. That’s the reason why I tested the display more and received some interesting results about the display of this laptop.

Let’s put these results in perspective with the help of numbers.

  • This laptop covers 114% of DCI-P3 color space.
  • It also covers over 80% of the more challenging DCI-P3 gamut.
  • The brightness of this laptop’s display can go up to 392 nits.

Audio Details of Asus ROG Zephyrus G14:

Although the size of this laptop is very thin, the speaker and audio quality have impressed me. Listening to music without earphones is not something I enjoyed on this laptop. Although the overall quality was good, the bass was a little weaker than I expected.

Keeping the volume at 100 can distort the audio. But that happens with most of the devices so it didn’t really bother me.

So, this was my experience with this latest professional-looking gaming laptop. Now, let’s discuss the answer to the question you have been waiting for.

The details of the pros and cons of Zephyrus G14 are given below:

Sleek and professional designRTX 4070 underperforms
Decent OLED displayAverage battery life
Loud and crispy audio
Decent number of available ports

The whole review of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 I have discussed above is actually the answer to this question. This laptop starts from $1,499. So, you have to make your decision on your own.

However, if you do not do high-level gaming on laptops, purchasing this laptop can be the right choice. That is because it can help you run decent games at a decent frame rate while giving a sleek design also.

To conclude it all, although the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 does not have the orthodox bulky design of gaming laptops, it offers a decent gaming experience. It may not provide high performance. That is because the company compromised it for its sleek design.

I recommend it to you if you are okay with mid-level gaming. If you are looking for a high-end gaming laptop, don’t buy this one. Although it can be a really decent choice for doing highly productive office work on it.
