To many people studying cyber security degrees, the life of a penetration tester (pentester for short) sounds ideal. As a pentester, your role is to try and break into a business’ network through any means that you can.

You will need to use the full extent of your knowledge and capabilities for this role. You may attempt to hack into the company’s network, you may leave a USB thumb drive in the parking lot, hoping someone plugs it in; or you may simply pose as an employee and make your way inside.

This job combines the glamor of spying with information security, and it’s a highly enticing, and well-paid, role.

IT Security Consultant

If you think you’ve got the chops to make it as a freelancer, perhaps the life of an IT security consultant is for you. These professionals are brought in by businesses to analyze their existing security and find out where it’s weak.

This role is interesting and varied, but work can be hard to come by at times for inexperienced freelancers.

Information is valuable, and if a company loses customer data, it can be on the hook for a huge fine. This is why the role of an information assurance engineer is so crucial. It requires specialist knowledge of data management and security, but you’ll almost certainly study this in your program.
